  12/26/2006: New and larger Eagle Recipient Plaque Installed.
In 2006, a project was led by Committee Member Frank Sanders to have a new plaque of Eagle Scouts created and mounted. There was no space for additional names of Eagle Scouts available on the existing plaque. John and Lois Zinn donated the plaque to the Troop and parish community. The plaque was installed in the hallway of the St. Joseph Middle School by John Zinn, Richard Slusser, and Frank Sanders. Others were on hand for the event.

  •   Fall Camporee Event Report held on September 29-30:
    As reported by Scoutmaster, Jeff Rosenzweig:
    "We sent two patrols (10 Scouts) to the 2006 Fall Camporee at Camp Conewago this past weekend, which was hosted by Troop 105 with assistance from Troop 101. A total of 12 patrols participated (I don't recall how many Troops attended). The theme was "Lewis & Clark" and the scouts were tested in several areas including Lewis & Clark trivia, first aid, fire-building with flint & steel, cooking authentic Hoe Cakes, mapping/orienteering, ropes/knots/lashings, etc.

    The program began Friday evening with a big-screen showing of National Geographic's Lewis & Clark IMAX movie. Stations consumed most of Saturday. A Catholic Mass was held Saturday evening followed by Campfire & skits. An Interfaith worship service was held Sunday morning which included singing, psalms and prayers/readings from several faith backgrounds (Native American, Hebrew, Bahai, etc.). We participated in all of the events.

    Our patrols brought home several beautiful, hand-made plaques and ribbons (click on photo of awards to see enlargements) including the coveted awards for Best Overall and Most Spirited. Patrols were penalized if they received assistance from the adults. I can say with confidence that Troop 103's scouts received no adult assistance and their awards resulted from their own skills and knowledge. All awards will be on display at tomorrow's PLC. Our scouts are very proud. Here is an approximate breakdown of their successes:

  • 1st Place: Mapping, Ropework, Translation, Firebuilding, Pine Cone Toss, Keelboat;
  • 2nd Place: Tomahawk, Footrace, Obstacle Course, Flag Raising, Quotes (ring toss), Trivia;
  • 3rd Place: Tomahawk

      7/9/2006 - Summer Camp at Camp Rodney

  • Photos from this year's event
  • The Camp Rodney Website
  • Summer camp at Camp Rodney was a busy and exciting week for Troop 103.  Here are some statistics about our week-long activities.
    • Merit Badges - The scouts collectively earned approximately 55 merit badges.
    • Brownsea Program - Three first year scouts completed the Brownsea program.  This premier, high energy camper program teaches scouts to work as a patrol while learning many of the skills needed for advancement to First Class.   They are exposed to skills such as swimming, boating, shooting archery, nature and basketry.  I would like to thank Richard Slusser and Dave Mulder for their detailed assistance with this excellent program throughout the week.  All three scouts earned their Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chit awards.
    • Service Project - The entire Troop participated in a service project at the camp where a dangerous hole was filled and a service road was repaired from water runoff damage.  The road was improved to divert future runoff from damaging the road further.
    • Retreat on Wednesday Night - The Troop had the honor of retiring the flag on Wednesday night during Retreat Ceremonies.
    • Awards - The Troop received the following awards and accomplishments
      • Honor Troop Award - The Troop received the coveted honor Troop Award which is awarded to outstanding troops who show excellence in participation, skills and service throughout the week.  Some of the activities used to determine this include participation in nightly retreat ceremonies, service projects,  high level of campsite inspections, polar bear swims, volleyball competition, camp wide games, adult leader training, etc..
      • Baden-Powell Patrol Award - The Brownsea Patrol made up of members from our troop received the Baden-Powell Patrol Award.  This award is named after scouting's founding father, Lord Robert Baden-Powell and is awarded to patrols that go that extra mile and show heightened enthusiasm and scout spirit.
      • Leave No Trace Education - The entire troop (and Friday night visitors) participated in the "Leave no trace" program presented to our troop at our campsite.  The program educates scouts on minimizing the impact on our environment while conducting camping and other scouting activities.
      • Camp Wide Games Winner - One of our patrols was a divisional winner of the Camp wide games event.
      • Volleyball Champions - Our troop remained undefeated all week long and trounced the Camp Staff team too during the Volleyball games.
      • Polar Bear Swim - 14 Scouts and 4 adults completed the requirements to earn the Polar Bear Swim patch.
