  December 3-5 - Planning Weekend and Orienteering at Camp Conewago
Boy Scout Troop 103 will be camping at the Camp Conewago Lodge. The weekend will include a session to plan activities for the upcoming year including a budget. Scouts will also participate in an orienteering course using map and compass skills.

  •   Fall Troop Elections - November 23, 2010
    Troop Elections will occur next Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at our regular Troop meeting. It is very important that all scouts review the information below and attend next Tuesday to both place their vote and submit your Leadership Position Application Form. for various positions available.

    In preparation, each scout should review his current and next Rank requirements that may include holding a position of responsibility. Troop Elections are only held every 6 months so it is important to take advantage of this opportunity.    Scout should again review the various Leadership Positions indicated on the following web page: http://bsatroop103.org/leadership/TroopPositions.php Complete the following "Leadership Position Application form" this week and bring it to the Election Meeting on Tuesday. Indicate on the form your first, second and third choices for positions.

      Appalachian Trail Hike - Center Point Knob/White Rocks - November 12-14, 2010

Photo by Mark Larson The Troop camped at the Native American Village at Camp Tuckahoe on Friday night. at about 8:30PM most members of the Troop saw a very large meteor with a fire tail that was traveling North through the sky. This same meteor was spotted by others in Gaithersburg, Maryland and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

    Saturday morning began at sunrise as scouts setup their stoves and prepared their breakfast meals. The camp was struck and the packs were loaded as the Troop began their backpacking trip just after 9:00AM.

    The initial agenda for the day was to hike about 6.3 to and see the following sights and stay at a shelter along the Appalachian Trail.

  • As we got to the Alec Kennedy shelter at 2 PM, the senior patrol leader realized from a posted sign that no open fires were allowed during this time of year. A quick decision was made to camp at the Native American Village within Camp Tuckahoe where open fires were allowed. The total trip amounted to 7.78 miles as recorded by one of the scouts navigating with a GPS. Check out the Photos and Video to see the highlights of the weekend backpacking adventure where scouts experienced the independence of carrying their own gear along the historic Appalachian Trail.

  •   Joseph Cirabisi's Eagle Ceremony - 10/30/2010
    Joseph Cirabisi was presented the rank of Eagle Scout on October 30, 2010 at the 6:00PM mass. A gathering followed at the Social Hall.

    Joey's Eagle Project consisted of building a prayer/reflection area at St. Joseph Church in Hanover. The weather and other elements forced a relocation of Joey's project once it had begun. At its first site, Joey's project required removal of a tree stump, grading and eventually seeding with grass seed. Once relocated, Joey's project required excavating for and pouring a concrete sidewalk and base for a statue of the Holy Family, constructing benches and planting shrubbery.   • Update: On October 2, 2010 the Guinness World Record for "Longest knotted rope chain in 5 minutes" was smashed by scouts of Troop 103 (along with many other scouts, leaders, and family members at the event.). The previous record of 6788 ft. was surpassed by almost 3,000 ft!! The new record (when confirmed by Guinness) will be 9,774 ft 2 inches. John Conrad, the organizer of the record breaking event said "Great job to all who participated in making it such a successful event!! A commemorative 4x6 card along with sections of cord to each scout and leader who participated will be distributed."

    This year’s program was set in our “Wild West” town of Deadwood. Boy Scout units are invited to our great council encampment for the weekend, complete with gateways, featuring the “Great Scouting Centennial.” Saturday’s evenings activities include a Pass In Review for all the units, followed by the famous Wizard Safari campfire show for the entire encampment and visitors, topped off with a fireworks display that will leave you breathless.

  •   Joey Cirabisi, Troop 103's 75th Eagle Scout - August 17, 2010
    I am proud to report that Troop 103 Life Scout Joey Cirabisi was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout tonight (8/17/10).   • Tuesday, August 10, 2010 - 7:00PM - Regular Troop Meeting is planned with many scouts scheduled for advancement Board of Review. Those scouts receiving a BOR are asked to attend in Class A uniforms.
  • Saturday, August 14, 2010 - 7:15PM - An outdoor Court of Honor is planned at the Church Picnic Grove following the 6PM mass. If there is inclement weather, we will hold the Court of Honor ceremony in the social hall.


  •   Alan Boyle, Troop 103's 74th Eagle Scout - July 20, 2010
    I am proud to report that Troop 103 Life Scout Alan Boyle was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout tonight (7/20/10). Alan's Eagle Project consisted of restoring the original springhouse in the Lutheran Retirement Village at Utz Terrace. The restoration included clearing away brush and replacing the roof on the 150 year old structure. Please join me in congratulating Alan and in thanking his family, friends, leaders and others who helped make his accomplishment possible. Attached is a photo of Troop 103's 74th Eagle Scout with his proud parents.

    Generally the cost to attend is about $240 per scout. Separate emails have been sent out to each family/attendee on June 29, 2010 with specific final estimated costs. Cost vary depending upon hotel room arrangements and T-Shirt orders.

      Summer Camp - July 11-17, 2010
    1. General Troop Meeting Next Tuesday, July 6th. Next Tuesday's PLC (Patrol Leader's Council) has been converted to a general Troop Meeting. It is our last opportunity to meet before leaving for summer camp on Sunday, July 11th. We'll be completing blue Merit Badge Cards, reviewing schedules and finalizing summer camp details. Position patches will be distributed; please sew them onto your Class A uniforms before gear drop-off on Friday, July 9th (see below).

    2. Packing List, Summer Camp Gear Drop off.  A Packing List is available here. Please drop off your summer camp gear on Friday evening, July 9th at 7 pm and contact me directly if this presents a problem. Please note the following:
    a. Low Profile Plastic Storage Tote, Backpack, Hat. These items do not appear on the Packing List but are recommended. The low profile plastic storage tote fits under your cot and contains your gear and keeps it dry.
    b. Old Shoes. Brownseas and others who expect to do the sunrise/sunset Bay Hike should bring a pair of old, closed-toe shoes that can be discarded afterward.
    c. Swimming Merit Badge: Please note the special packing requirements related to the Swimming inflation requirement (long pants, long-sleeved button down shirt, etc...) for Brownseas and other scouts taking Swimming Merit Badge;
    d. Bicycles: Scouts wishing to bring bicycles to summer camp should bring them to Gear drop-off. First year scouts (Brownseas) should not bring bicycles.
    3. Family Night. Family Night is Friday, July 16th. Parents and family are invited to join us for a hot dinner at 5:15 pm in the Dining Hall, followed by Retreat at 6:00 pm at the Main Parade Field, social hour in our campsite (Susquehannock) and an evening Campfire Program at 8:45 pm. The cost is $7.50. A dinner reservation form (click here for the dinner reservation form) is required. Please bring both when you drop off your scout's gear.

    4. Permission Slip & Itinerary. Click here for the Permission Slip and Itinerary. Please return the signed Permission Slip at gear drop-off.

    5. Directions to Camp, Camp Map. Directions to Rodney Scout Reservation and a camp map are here in the event you choose to visit with us at camp on Family Night.

    6. Departure & Return. We will depart for camp on Sunday, July 11th at approximately 10:00 a.m., after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Please arrive by 9:30 a.m. Please wear your bathing suit, Class B troop shirt and scout socks. Please bring a backpack containing your towel, sack lunch and (filled) water bottle. We will return home the following Saturday, July 17th in the early afternoon.

    7. No Troop Meeting on Tuesday, July 20th. We will not be meeting on the Tuesday immediately following summer camp. Rest up and prepare for the 100th Jamboree! Our next meeting will be on Tues., July 27th.

    8. July 4th. Have a great Independence Day!

  •   Erick von Sas Eagle Ceremony - 6/13/2010
    Erick von Sas was presented the rank of Eagle Scout on June 13, 2010 at the 10:15AM mass. A gathering followed at the Social Hall.

    Erick's Eagle Project consisted of improving the walking path leading to the pavilion in the St. Joseph Church Picnic Grove. Improvements included replacing rotted landscape timbers, replacing walking stones with gravel, and planting shrubs. Click Here to see the Photos of the event!
      Eagle Scout Gabi Rosenbrien - June 15, 2010
    I am proud to report that Troop 103 Life Scout Gabriel Rosenbrien was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout Tuesday night (6/15/10). Gabi's Eagle Project consisted of restoring and improving the Kemp Nature Laboratory at Hanover High School. He designed and led others in the construction and installation of a floating dock at the Lab's pond to facilitate the observation and collection of samples. He also took steps to eradicate phragmites australis, an invasive species of wetland reed, and planted grass in its place. Please join me in congratulating Gabi and in thanking his family, friends, leaders and others who helped make his accomplishment possible. Attached is a photo of Troop 103's 73rd Eagle Scout with his proud parents and Troop 103 Advancement Co-Chairs Dave Smith and Gene Huff.

    PS - After his Eagle Board of Review, Gabi squawked, "Last week I graduated a [Hanover] Night Hawk, tonight I became an Eagle, and in the fall I'll be a [Lehigh] Mountain Hawk".
      Memorial Day Parade - May 31, 2010
    Bravery honored by Troop 103
    Many scouts participated in the Memorial Day Parade where veterans were honored. The Troop also attended the ceremony that was held following the parade at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

    The Hanover Evening Sun newspaper reporter Travis Lau interviewed some of the scouts.

  •   Order of the Arrow Ordeal Weekend - May 1, 2010
    Three scouts attended the induction ceremony of the Order of the Arrow over the weekend. The induction ceremony, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership in the Order. The Order of the Arrow is recognized as Scouting's National Honor Society. Congratulations scouts!

  •   Summer Camp Merit Badge Selections Due April 20, 2010
    Electronic Merit Badge registration for summer camp will be conducted by the Troop and begins this Saturday morning (personal attendance not necessary). Merit Badge Classes fill up, and the early birds get the worms!!!

    STEPS:

    Scouts & parents should prepare by reviewing the attached Program Opportunities and Program Schedule. See links below. New Scouts will automatically be registered in the Brownsea Program and do not require selecting merit badges.

    As soon as possible, scouts should indicate their Merit Badge preferences on the attached Program Planning Sheet, being sure to consult the Program Schedule for Merit Badge class availability and to avoid scheduling conflicts.

    Please bring Merit Badge preferences to tomorrow's scout meeting or email them to sm@bsatroop103.org and cc@bsatroop103.org ASAP (especially for older scouts).

      April 11, 2010 - Eagle Scout Award Ceremony for Cortlin Dell
  • Photos of the Eagle Award Ceremony are now available.


  • Cort's Eagle Project consisted of designing and executing improvements to the Heidelberg Recreation Park, where Cort played baseball as a child. Cort was responsible for the recent installation of park benches, shade trees and weed control measures.


  • 10 minute Slide show of Cortlin's Cub Scout and Boy Scout Experience. Please be patient and allow one minute for the slide show to load and begin playing.

  •   February 19-21, 2010: Klondike Derby
    Click for more photos The Troop spent a wintry weekend in the northern wilderness of Camp Tuckahoe (Maple Lodge) to participate in the annual Klondike Derby.

    The 2010 Klondike Derby was held on February 19-21, 2010. Scouts from the Blue & Grey District and the First Capital District were challenged to Scout Olympics on Saturday during the activity portion of the Klondike.

  •   Scout Sunday - 8:30AM Mass on February 14, 2010
    Scouting celebrated its 100th Anniversary and three scouts were awarded the Ad Altare Dei Religious Emblem during the 8:30AM Mass. Click here to read the presentation at the 8:30AM Mass.

      2009 Scout of the Year
    Each year we recognize the top three Scouts in our Troop for the Scout of the Year Award.

    This year we recognized and congratulate the Scouts of the Year Mark (Gold Emblem), David (Silver Emblem) and Joey (Bronze Emblem) for their dedication to scouting and living the scout oath and laws in their daily life. The Scouts earn points throughout the year for participation in various activities, and payment of dues.

    The points from each scout are tallied up for the year.

    A sub committee is formed to review the results with a focus on the top 5 scouts.

    In addition to points earned, CHARACTER is an important element that is considered in the final selections for Scout of the Year.

  •   January 26, 2010 - Summer Camp Deposits are Due
    Summer Camp deposits of $25 are due by Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Deposits are required to secure your son's participation in this very important week of scouting fun and advancement opportunity. Deposits will be collected at this Saturday's Court of Honor or at next Tuesday's Troop meeting.

      January 23, 2010 - Winter Court of Honor - Scout of the Year
    Our annual winter Court of Honor is this Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 7:15PM in the Social Hall.

    Please attend and show support to our Scouts being recognized for their achievements. The Scout-of-the-Year award will be announced.

    In 2009 Scouts collectively earned 82 merit badges, 18 rank badges, 18 Special Awards.
    Adults collectively completed 35 training courses.


    The Troop has been recognized and awarded the 2009 Centennial Quality Unit Award

  •   January 19, 2010- Eagle Scout Erick Von Sas
    A message from our Scoutmaster.....

    I am proud to report that Troop 103 Life Scout Erick Von Sas was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout Tuesday night (1/19/2010).

    Erick's Eagle Project consisted of improving the walking path leading to the pavilion in the St. Joseph Church Picnic Grove. Improvements included replacing rotted landscape timbers, replacing walking stones with gravel, and planting shrubs.

    Please join me in congratulating Erick and in thanking his family, friends, leaders and others who helped make his accomplishment possible. Attached is a photo of our clearly relieved Eagle Scout with his clearly proud mom. (click here to see more photos)

      January 19, 2010: OA Election Night
    Scouts of Troop 103,
    Please make a strong effort to attend this Tuesday's Troop meeting.  Tuesday night's agenda includes elections of your fellow scouts into the Order of the Arrow.
    At least 50% of the members of Troop 103 must be present to conduct the elections so your attendance is important!
     
    The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It uses American Indian-styled traditions and ceremonies to bestow recognition on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting. 
     
    Order of the ArrowThe Purpose of the OA is to:
    • Recognize those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and through that recognition cause others to conduct themselves in a way that warrants similar recognition.
    • Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scout’s experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp.
    • Develop leaders with the willingness, character, spirit and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation.
    • Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.
    There are specific eligibility requirements for those who can be elected into the OA.  Our Scoutmaster will contact those eligible scouts to see if they are interested in being considered for this OA election.   More details about the election will be presented on Tuesday night.
     
     
     
      January 22: Snow Tubing Night
    The Troop will be Snow Tubing at Ski Liberty on Friday night, January 22, 2010. We will be meeting at the Church parking lot at 5:30PM. See the itinerary for details and complete the two permission slips listed below.
